Do you consider yourself a good Person? Most of us do. We would help someone in need. We try to do good deeds without expecting anything in return. We try to be honest, caring and kind.
But have you ever told a lie? Have you ever taken something without permission no matter what its value? Have you ever in your life looked at something or someone with lustful intentions?
Then by God’s standards we broke His Law and the answer is NO we are not good.
As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. “Good teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” “Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good—except God alone.” (Mark 10:17-18 NIV)
So if no one is good, then what sets us apart from the world?????
We are called to Holiness. Leviticus 20:26 says, “You are to be Holy to me because I, the Lord, am Holy, and I have set you apart from the nations to be my own.”
We are called to be set apart, different from the world.
If the world goes left why do we follow? Why do we listen to the world’s preaching, music, advice, opinions? Why do we allow others to water down the Gospel and make it seem okay to do the very things that God has called us out of? John 15:19 says, “If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you.”
A few years ago a very strong Christian friend of mine did something that I didn’t agree with personally. He was concerned that I was uncomfortable with it and was taken back because I wanted to leave the gathering. He then asked me why I didn’t do the thing that he did. I asked him, “If I did, what would set me apart from every other person in this world?” I then told him that God has called us as believers and followers of Christ to a higher standard of living, one that comes with certain sacrifices and denouncing the desires of the flesh. I told him in no way was I condemning him for his actions, but that God specifically told me not to partake.
Romans 12:1-2 NIV: “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
1 Corinthians 7:31 NIV: “those who use the things of the world, as if not engrossed in them. For this world in its present form is passing away.”
The Gospel is alive and we are alive in Christ. So if we try to partner with the world our message will die, because as 1 Corinthians puts it, the world is passing away.
He has called us out of darkness and into His marvelous light. It is time for us to stand for Holiness and not let ourselves be overcome by the temptations of this world.
